Comment on Premium Gas by Blake Gross https://ma.tt/2007/04/premium-gas/#comment-603998 Thu, 03 Apr 2025 18:07:24 +0000 http://photomatt.net/2007/04/01/premium-gas/#comment-603998 I don’t know who your resources are, but higher octane gasoline does not burn hotter (at a higher temperature) than lower octane gas. This is kind of an old wives tale. The term “burn hotter” is actually meant to mean burn more efficiently, not at a higher temperature. This has been misunderstood for many years. More octane decreases pre-ignition (fuel firing before it is fully compressed). Decreasing pre-ignition increases the efficiency because more fuel will fire at full compression. Some engines need the added octane to operate at optimum efficiency. Most don’t, however. Putting higher octane fuel in a car that doesn’t need it would make very little, if any, improved efficiency. So all you would be doing is spending more money for fuel than you need to. Yes, higher octane will make a larger percentage of fuel fire at the same time, but it won’t increase the temperature or “burn hotter” in terms of temperature.

It’s a massive time saver. I used to have a monthly recurring to do item to handle my expense reporting, and I literally last week removed that. Even though we switched about a year ago, I still had it and realised I hadn’t done this type of sitting down and manually creating a report since then.

I love seeing little hidden efficiencies like this, way to go! I bet that makes a huge difference in time saved across the org.

The more eyeballs, the more advertising revenue, so write stuff that attracts eyeballs.

Let’s say I want to go all in on Automattic products and services. And why not? They’re excellent and meet diverse needs

But they’re quite disjointed

Separately, I use WordPress/Tumblr/Simplenote/Jetpack/Longreads/PocketCasts without even trying to like Automattic (I only realized today that Automattic owns PocketCasts). They’re just great products.

And they’re tantalisingly close to becoming a really great ecosystem.

I want a dashboard that gives me everything in one place (a bit like the Automatic for Agencies dashboard but for end users).

I want to use Automattic for everything, and I’m sure users of one great product would love to use many of the others, if only they knew about them and could easily integrate them (or at least see them).

So am I just dreaming?

I’d guess not one in a hundred companies puts this level of thought into offer letters. One detail: the “sign at the top” research has been retracted. It seems the honesty researchers were, well, dishonest. Search “francesca gino fraud” for more info.

And designing the offer letter for the end user is such a good approach.

Thanks for sharing these ideas. It would have been cool if they made it into the Inc article!

This is exactly what happened with one of my sites in 2019. I was not in a position to invest in the cost, hence I had to take the entire site down, as it was showing malicious link everywhere.

That’s the reason, despite of all the discussions going around with Matt, and Automattic, I decided to stick to WordPress.com.

It’s crazy that a host’s security can cost you more than the site itself.

I’ve fixed a number of hacks for others ober the years. Today, I personally update all my client sites individually and do not rely on auto updates or the roll back plugin. I feel that me being in tune to what is going on with those sites is important enough to DIY. And that’s why I pay more fory hosting plan to ensure I’m on a higher level of service than the shared resellers offer. Knock on wood, I’ve been able to avoid these issues and I’m able to clean a hack with instructions. I know many who have had to pay hosts who, like you wrote, are ultimately responsible for the intrusions. I’ll be bringing this up for discussion to our next WordPress Asheville Meetup a week from Tuesday.

Thank you for providing a dedicated thread in the forum at that time to gather feedback from us, the WordPress.com users.

I appreciate that WordPress.com listened to those suggestions. In fact, I feel that all my feedback was addressed: creating a plan between the Pro plan and the free plan (Starter plan), setting pricing according to regions, offering monthly pricing, and providing à la carte options or add-ons (such as the option to add storage size)—everything was fulfilled. I’m very grateful for that.

When the pricing was reverted to the original structure, I’m still enjoying the legacy Pro plan. Thank you.

Comment on Ed Catmull on Change by Corey https://ma.tt/2025/02/ed-catmull-on-change/#comment-603853 Wed, 05 Mar 2025 18:28:50 +0000 https://ma.tt/?p=137101#comment-603853 I read Creativity Inc nearly 10 years ago and found it very insightful at the time. I’m overdue to revisit the book.

This pattern of resistance to innovation is remarkably consistent across time. Whether it’s film editors clinging to razor blades or WordPress users defending the classic editor, we see the same human dynamics at play.

What’s fascinating is how quickly the controversial becomes conventional. Tools that faced fierce opposition eventually become the new standard that users later defend against further change.

We’re seeing this exact pattern play out right now with AI and LLM tools. Many content creators and developers are resisting these technologies, focusing on short-term workflow disruptions rather than long-term capabilities. The skilled practitioners feel their expertise being challenged, just as film editors and classic WordPress users once did. It’s great to see the ones, like myself, who embrace the change, explore the tools, and see where it takes you. It’s quite fun.

The lesson seems to be that meaningful innovation often can’t be democratically approved by current experts. Their expertise itself creates attachment to existing workflows. Sometimes leadership means pushing through the initial resistance knowing that, in time, the benefits will become self-evident.

I wonder what WordPress feature released in the near future and met with resistance we’ll all take for granted in five years?
